An activist and self-described drag queen central to New York's gay liberation movement and the 1969 Stonewall uprising. She co-founded STAR with Sylvia Rivera to support homeless queer and trans young people. Much of what circulates as her quotes is unverified.
She stood at the front of a movement that would not exist without her, and spent what little she had caring for the people everyone else ignored. Her joy and defiance still define what Pride is meant to mean.
Because so much attributed to her is uncertain, this profile leans on documented biography.
