Writer and scholar (born Gloria Jean Watkins) whose work on love, race, class and feminism reached far beyond academia. She wrote under a lowercase pen name, borrowed from her great-grandmother, to keep the focus on the ideas rather than herself.
She wrote about love and justice as things people practise, not just feel or believe in, and made feminist and anti-racist thought accessible to readers who had never encountered it in a classroom. Her books remain a common starting point for people new to this thinking.
'All About Love' and 'Teaching to Transgress' are the usual entry points.
